Program Details

Randori sessions are contiuous open mat sparring rounds where students put their training to the test for the full duration of the session. Unlike structured classes, randori is student-driven: participants choose whether to focus on live rolling, positional sparring, or drilling techniques with partners.

This format fosters experimentation, problem-solving, and real-time application of skills under resistance. Randori is open only to practitioners with at least 30 prior classes or six months of grappling experience, ensuring a safe and productive environment for everyone involved. Sessions often mix Gi and No-Gi formats depending on the schedule, giving students the opportunity to adapt across different styles of practice.

Frequently Asked questions

Do I need to be an SJJC member to attend Randori?

No. Randori is open to drop-ins as well as members. The experience requirement still applies regardless of membership status. You can book online or call us at (850) 368-6861.

What is the experience requirement to attend?

Randori requires at least 30 prior classes or six months of grappling experience. Open mat without a structured coach present only works when everyone on the mat knows how to move and take care of their partners.

Is Randori Gi, No-Gi, or both?

It varies by session. Randori mixes Gi and No-Gi formats depending on the schedule. Check the class schedule on the site for specifics before you come in. If you don't have a Gi yet, do not worry. Wear athletic clothes and we have loaner Gis for you to use if needed.

Is there any instruction during Randori?

Randori is student-driven open mat. There is no formal instruction or coached drilling. If you want technical instruction alongside your sparring, the other class options may be a better fit.

Can I use Randori as a way to try out SJJC before committing to a membership?

If you're new to BJJ entirely, the free goal setting consultation is the better starting point. If you're an experienced practitioner visiting from another gym, drop-in access to Randori is a legitimate way to get on the mat and experience the community.
