BJJ Fundamentals
Master the basics of BJJ to build a solid foundation
Program Details
Our Fundamentals BJJ class is the starting point for anyone new to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, as well as a valuable refresher for returning students. Classes focus on the building blocks of the art: core positions, essential submissions, grappling basics, escapes, transitions, and movement patterns.
Through structured progressions, students gain a solid foundation and begin to understand the principles that make techniques effective. Each session emphasizes drilling with partners, learning how to apply leverage and control, and gradually introducing controlled sparring. Fundamentals lays the groundwork for success in higher-level classes.
Who is this class for?
Great fit if you...
- Have never trained BJJ or any grappling art before
- Are in the middle of the 6 Week Transformation Challenge and building your class hours
- Have some prior experience but want to fill gaps in your foundational knowledge
- Feel intimidated by mixed-level classes and want a more structured on-ramp
- Are returning to BJJ after a significant break and need to rebuild from the ground up
Consider a different class if...
- You've been training consistently for a while and are comfortable in most foundational positions ( All Levels BJJ is likely the better fit)
- You're looking specifically for a women-only class ( Women's Jiu Jitsu is designed for that)
- You already have a clear competition focus and want intensity-driven training ( Advanced BJJ is built for that)
What you can expect
Curriculum Built for Beginners
Every session covers core positions, escapes, transitions, and submissions in a logical, progressive sequence. Nothing is assumed. You'll understand why a technique works, not just how to do it.
Partner Drilling Before Live Sparring
Fundamentals introduces sparring gradually. Before you're rolling live, you'll develop movement patterns and positional awareness through structured partner drills. It's a deliberate pace that builds real competence.
Coaching That Focuses on Correct Movement
In Fundamentals, coaches prioritize technique correction over volume. You'll get feedback on your positioning, your drilling, and your movement patterns so that what you're building from the start is actually sound.
A Clear Path Forward
Fundamentals is the foundation everything else builds on. Students who complete the 6 Week Transformation Challenge through this class enter Prime Membership with the positioning, movement, and vocabulary they need to keep growing.
The best time to start BJJ was yesterday. The second best time is now.

Frequently Asked questions
Do I need to be in shape to start BJJ Fundamentals?
No. Most people who start jiu jitsu are not in BJJ shape, because that comes from training. The class is designed to meet you where you are physically and build from there.
Will I be sparring on my first day?
Not in a live, competitive sense. Fundamentals introduces sparring gradually through controlled partner drills and positional work. Full live rolling comes after you've built a foundation of basic movement and positioning.
How does BJJ Fundamentals connect to the 6 Week Transformation Challenge?
The 6 Week Transformation Challenge is SJJC's on-ramp for new members, and Fundamentals is one of the classes you'll attend during that program. It's where most new members spend the majority of their first six weeks.
What's the difference between BJJ Fundamentals and All Levels BJJ?
Fundamentals assumes no prior experience and moves at a pace appropriate for newer students. All Levels BJJ brings beginners and experienced practitioners into the same class, which works well once you have some mat time behind you.
How do I get started?
Every new member begins with a free goal setting consultation. You'll talk through your goals, get a tour of the facility, and find out exactly what to expect before your first class. You can book online or call us at (850) 368-6861.
